Brescia – At the Tennis Forza e Costanza 1911 in Brescia (headquarters of via Signorini) everything is ready, also at the Ospitaletto Tennis Center. Because the 23rd edition of the Lampo Trophy is coming soon: Monday was the day of the arrival in the province of the national youth under 12 and the group draw ceremony, held in the frame of Villa Presti a Ospitaletto. On Tuesday, the three-day group stage will begin, with seats for Friday (semi-finals) and Saturday (finals). The participating countries will no longer be eight but seven, due to the renunciation of Israel for issues related to the conflict that is shaking the world, but the quality of the event directed by Gianni Capacchietti remains unchanged. The proof is in the many talents ready to go on the field, as well as in the history of an event that since 2002 has welcomed numerous champions of the future. Six of the seven national teams at the start – all but Switzerland – have already triumphed at least once in the competition, either male or female (or both), with South Korea determined to repeat the double win of 2024. The Asian selection was drawn in Group A (the groups are equal for both men’s and women’s competition), along with ——-Italy, Austria and Canada. In Group B, Slovenia, Switzerland and Mexico. The four-team groups will be played at Brescia, the three-team ones at Ospitaletto.

Watch also the promises that will wear the blue shirt of Italy, always protagonists at the Lampo Trophy. For the men’s national team, captained by the young coach Andrea Viceconte, in the race Mattia Bongiovanni from Macerata (this year finalist in the prestigious tournament Tennis Europe of Porto San Giorgio), plus the winners of the national title of double at the last Italian championships under 11: One is the Turin Gabriele Aceto, the other the son of art riccionese Pietro Galimberti, whose father, Giorgio, has defended for six years the blue colors in the Davis Cup. The Italian women’s national team, led by Maurizio Calcagno, is instead formed by the Lecce Virginia Cereghini, the umbra Vittoria Fredduzzi and the Palermo Aurora Freni. They have the task of trying to return to our country a women’s title that has been missing since 2017, while the last Italian victory among the “boys” is two years later. On the first day, for blue and blue there will be Austria (in Brescia). From 8.45 girls, from 14.15 boys. “We are looking forward to enjoy this new edition of the Lampo Trophy – comments the event director Gianni Capacchietti -, and admire many young people ready to stand up. Beating South Korea promises to be a complicated task, but expect a high standard from all participants, as it has always been year after year”.

Italy's Lampo Trophy starts off on an uphill slope: double defeat against Austria, among regrets

Austrians Lisa Freudentaler and Nina Buchegger: they gave their national team the victory against Italy (photo Alvaro Maffeis)

Brescia – In the entire history of the Lampo Trophy, there were very few times that Italy closed a day so full of regrets. At their debut in the 23rd edition, both Azzurrine and Azzurrini came close to beating Austria, yet both national teams ended with a fistful of flies in hand, much disappointment and equally to blame. On the beaten ground of Tennis Forza and Costanza 1911 (located in via Signorini) the first to chew bitter were the girls captained by Maurizio Calcagno, beaten in the morning in a rocambolesque challenge to say the least. In the lead thanks to the victory of the Palermo Aurora Freni against Lisa Freudentaler (6-4 6-4), the azzurrine were caught because of the defeat of Vittoria Fredduzzi (double 6-1 by Nina Buchegger), but they seemed on the right way to rectify the situation in the double, after the first set won by Fredduzzi/Cereghini against Freudentaler/Buchegger (6-4). Instead, the rivals soon balanced their scores and so everything was decided at the long tie-break final to 10 points, for the occasion proposed with the novelty of the dry point in case of 9-9. And precisely in that particular match-point situation on both sides the confrontation was decided: despite the 9-8 Italy (given by the rivals with two double fouls in a row) the game was taken by the Austrians, Winning the last two points and taking a potentially key success in the fight for access to the semi-finals.

Similar result for the men’s duel, with the difference that in that case the first point went to the Austrians (nice victory of Lennard Wala against the Piedmontese Gabriele Aceto, passed by 6-4 6-0) and the second to the Azzurrini captain Andrea Viceconte. Signed by Mattia Bongiovanni, scoring 7-5 7-6 against his peers Jonas Mittermayr in a match that saw the Maceratese play better all important points and also clear two set-points in the twelfth game of the second set. A performance that earned him the place for the decisive double, alongside Pietro Galimberti, son of former davisman Giorgio. Against Wala/Mittermayr, the pair worked wonderfully until leading 6-0 4-2, but when it was time to close the two Italians disjoined. They lost 4 games in a row and the set, then five of the first six points of the long tie-break final, which saw them down 5-1. With a reaction of pride they reversed the score going forward 6-5, but the final head to head still gave reason to rivals, who completed the comeback winning 0-6 6-4 10/8. On Wednesday, in Brescia, for the Italian national teams there will be those of Canada, both defeated by South Korea (3-0 girls, 2-1 boys) in the other game of Groups A. In Group B, on stage at the Ospitaletto Tennis Center, double victory for Mexico who defeated by 2-21 Slovenia in both men’s and women’s matches, returning to the 0-1 mark. Wednesday the debut of Switzerland, resting on the first day.

Two more defeats for Italy at the Lampo Trophy: the Azzurrini give up to Canada and are out of the race for the semi-finals

The Canadian Bishop Grossutti, protagonist of the success of the North American against Italy (photo Alvaro Maffeis)

Brescia – The group stage of the Lampo Trophy 2025 still has one day to go, but for both Italian national teams there is already a certainty. And it is definitely bitter, since regardless of the outcome of Thursday’s match against South Korea neither the girls captained by Maurizio Calcagno nor the boys captained by Andrea Viceconte will be in competition in the semi-finals on Friday. On the clay courts of Tennis Forza and Costanza 1911 (located in via Signorini), the two defeats against Canada were added to those on the opening day against Austria. But if on Tuesday both national blue under 12 had closed among regrets, this time there is little to blame because the North American peers proved superior taking the success – in both challenges – already at the end of the singles. Very little history in the women’s ones: Yasmine Souissi gave Canada 1-0 beating 6-1 6-2 Palermo’s Aurora Freni, while Bishop Grossutti left just one more game in the second set to Virginia Cereghini (6-1 6-3), closing the score. Then, for Italy came at least the point of the flag thanks to the double, won by the pair Fredduzzi/ Cereghini against the duo Sovissi/ Radovic, beaten by 7-5 1-6 10/6. Due to the new victory of South Korea (3-0 without appeal to Austria), Italy is mathematically out and the Asians are instead sure of a place in the semifinals. The other is to be won on Thursday in the Canada-Austria head-to-head. In Group B, at the Ospitaletto Tennis Centre, Switzerland make their super-debut after leaving crumbs for Mexico and on Thursday they will face Slovenia to secure first place in the group.

Practically identical, at least as far as Group A is concerned, the situation in the men’s competition of the event for nations of the Tennis Europe circuit. Because, as I said, the Azzurrini also lost again and South Korea beat Austria (3-0), so for the Koreans is already secure the qualification for the semi-finals, while Canada is back in the race and will play the place with Austria. Out of ours, which would not be enough even a venture against South Korea (Thursday). Decisive, against Canada, the defeats of Pietro Galimberti and Mattia Bongiovanni: the first did not manage to keep up with the majority of Dustin Huang’s ball heaviness, while the second gave up 6-4 4-6 10/7 to Daniel Marinov, losing a long tiebreak strongly conditioned by large wind gusts. The Canadian managed them better than the Marchigiano and he deserved the success. From the men’s Group B, on stage at the Ospitaletto Tennis Center, the other team already qualified for the semifinals: it is Mexico, who in the aftermath of the victory against Slovenia also beat Switzerland, bringing back the 1-0 of the Swiss and winning by 0-6 7-6 10/5 the deciding double. On Thursday the Mexicans will be at rest, in Switzerland and Slovenia: the direct clash is worth the other place for the semi-finals.

Lampo Trophy, here are the semi-finals: South Korea, Mexico, Switzerland and Canada remain in the competition

Korean left-hander Yoonjae Suh: he won all the singles matches played at the Lampo Trophy (photo Alvaro Maffeis)

Brescia – Italy will not be there, neither in the men’s nor in the women’s, because they were eliminated in the group stage. But the semi-finals of the Lampo Trophy 2025, under-12 event for Tennis Europe nations, promise equally spectacle, fun and the opportunity to admire some of the future talents of world tennis. After the first three days of competition, on the courts of the Tennis Forza and Costanza 1911 in Brescia city and the Tennis Center Ospitaletto (in the province), the competing nations remained four, able to guarantee themselves a place in the semi-finals with both boys and girls. Not surprising the presence of South Korea, which appeared in Lombardy with the aim of replicating the double of the 2024 edition and so far has shown to have all the cards in order to succeed, winning (full score) Group A both in male and female. After their successes against Canada and Austria in the first two days, the Koreans have completed the task by beating also the Italian national teams, already cut off from the race to the semi-finals. In the morning, Choi Yoonseol and Lim Yeonkyung left little room to the blue of captain Maurizio Calcagno, dominating first the singles and then the double in pairs, while in the afternoon they did the same Minchan Kwon and Yoonjae Suh, passed 3-0 against the boys captain Andrea Viceconte. For Italy, therefore, an edition decidedly to forget, cause (also) an unfavorable draw that sent the Azzurri in the same group of the two favourites of the eve, South Korea and Canada.

In the semi-finals, for the girls from South Korea there will be the rivals of Mexico, runners-up in Group B at Ospitaletto. Today they were at rest, but the victory of Switzerland against Slovenia guaranteed qualification to them as well as to the Swiss. For the red cross of the protagonist Taleah Halloun, passed in comeback, in semi-final there will be Canada, second in Group A thanks to a laborious victory against Austria. The Canadians won the decisive double, with the pair Souissi/ Radovic promoted to 6-3 2-6 10/9 against Freudenthaler/ Buchegger. In the men, on the other hand, the opponent in the semi-final of South Korea will be Switzerland, who beating 2-1 Slovenia took second place in Group B. Mexico-Canada the other men’s semifinals: the first (now retired) were already sure of the qualification with a day in advance, by virtue of two wins in the first two days, while the Canadians took the semi-final in a rocambolesque way, beating 2-1 Austria. After the North American lead with Dustin Huang and the 1-1 of Jonas Mittermayr, it was – again – decisive double. The Austrians smelled success when they went 6-4 5-3, but then came the comeback of rivals, scoring for 4-6 7-5 10/4 with two match points cancelled in the tenth game of the second set. Friday from 8.45 the women’s semi-finals: South Korea-Mexico at Ospitaletto, Canada-Switzerland in Brescia. Not before 14, the boys: South Korea-Switzerland in Brescia, Mexico-Canada at Ospitaletto.

South Korea seeks another double at the Lampo Trophy: Canada (men) and Switzerland (women) the final hurdles

Korean Minchan Kwon, protagonist with Yoonjae Suh of the ride that brought South Korea to the final (photo Alvaro Maffeis)

Brescia – It was South Korea against all on the eve, it will be South Korea against all even in the final day. With a new double in the crosshairs. Because the Asian national team has already won both men’s and women’s last edition of the Lampo Trophy, and a year later it qualified again for both finals of the event under 12 for nations of the Tennis Europe circuit. They did it by dominating against any opponent: Canada, Austria and Italy in the group stage, then Mexico (for girls) and Switzerland (for boys) in the semi-finals on Friday, between the Forza Tennis and Costanza 1911 in Brescia city and the Ospitaletto Tennis Center, in the province. Different fields but equal outcome, with a comfortable 2-0 without any history. The first one was signed by the girls, Choi Yoonseol and Lim Yeonkyung, who in the morning literally walked against the Mexican Julia Becerra and Constanza Fernandez, leaving only one game in two games. A little different for the boys, who found themselves in front of Switzerland and solved the problem in just over two hours. First, Minchan Kwon used the weight of the ball and centimeters against Jiro Kondo, tamed by 6-0 6-2, then Yoonjae Suh settled the score with a double 6-2 Carlo Brocchieri, product of the Basel Tc Old Boys, the same club where a certain Roger Federer grew up. In the arm of the young Helvetian there is quality, but the left corners of Suh (and a little too much haste) prevented him from setting up the comparison as he would have preferred.

In the men’s final on Saturday (9.30, at via Signorini del Tennis Forza e Costanza 1911 in Brescia), the Koreans will face Canada, who in the other semi-final defeated Mexico 2-1, revealing the Lampo Trophy 2025. Promoted as first place in Group B, the Mexicans also gave a lot of trouble to the North Americans: clearly lost the first match, they dragged the semifinal to the decisive double thanks to the winning comeback of David Llovera against Daniel Marinov, exceeded by 1-6 6-4 10/8. But the pair match was still right for Canada, scoring with the duo Huang/Lupu (6-1 6-4 at Morell/Llovera). The final South Korea-Canada will be a re-edition of the challenge played on Tuesday: on the opening day the Koreans easily won both singles, before losing the double, only point left in the way so far. The women’s final will be played at the Ospitaletto Tennis Center, starting at 11 am: for South Korea there will be Switzerland, scoring 2-1 in the semi-final against Canada. Taleah Halloun is back in the limelight: first, the young Helvetica signed a 1-1 win over Bishop Grossutti (after Mila Knaus’ loss to Yasmine Souissi), then she supported Knaus in the double, which ended 6-3 6-4 against Souissi/Radovic.

South Korea still unapproachable: it’s double again in the Flash Trophy

South Korea’s national team awarded for double success in the 2025 edition of the Lampo Trophy (photo by Alvaro Maffeis)

Brescia – Italy in 2007-2008, Canada in 2015 and 2016, South Korea in 2024 and 2025. They are the only three nations capable, in the long history of the Lampo Trophy (born in 2002), to win for two consecutive years both in men and women. A record that the Koreans reached on a triumphant Saturday, despite the heavy rain that fell in the morning forced the organizers to overtime. But no problem, because in both venues (the Tennis Forza and Costanza 1911 in Brescia and the Tennis Ospitaletto Center) the covered courts came to the rescue at the under 12 event of the Tennis Europe circuit, Thus the final day of the 23rd edition was played regularly. Good news for the Koreans, who started favourites in both finals and were confirmed as the strongest, beating 2-0 Canada in the last act of the men’s competition and 2-0 Switzerland in the women’s one. Two identical wins in the score, less in the course, because while the “girls” at Ospitaletto have dominated, closing in less than two and a half hours thanks to the victories of Choi Yoonseol (6-2 6-0 at Mila Knaus) and Lim Yeonkyung (6-3 6-1 at Taleah Halloun), the duel of the “boys” played in Brescia has instead proposed two super-balanced singles. Thanks (also) to the Canadian captain, who wanted to change things from his previous match against South Korea in Group A by bringing Dustin Huang and Vlad Lupu to the singles. Right move, because unlike the challenges of four days before there was a battle this time, although the field still gave the Koreans reason.

Minchan Kwon signed the 1-0 beating Huang by 6-4 7-6, in a duel played for much of the open ground and then migrated on the indoor concrete, after the third break for rain and after the Canadian had thrown to the wind a lead of 5-3 (with set point missed). Even more balanced the next challenge, a splendid battle of left corners between Yoonjae Suh and the talent Vlad Lupu. Lost the first set, and despite a knee pain, the Canadian shortstop managed to drag the challenge to the third set, showing remarkable quality of play. He also started better in the tie-break match at 10 points, taking a 3-1 lead, but then lost brilliance and even five points in a row, losing contact with the rival who closed the second match-point, with a score of 6-4 2-6 10/7. Thanks to the two new successes, South Korea (awarded by the organizers and Luca Pomarici, councilor of the Municipality of Brescia) is confirmed as the dominator of recent years of the Lampo Trophy: since its debut in 2022, the Koreans have won six of the eight titles, Equally divided between male and female. “We close another very successful edition – the comment of Gianni Capacchietti, creator and director of the Lampo Trophy -, characterized by a really high level of play. A big round of applause to Korea, which has confirmed itself unapproachable, but also to all the other participating nationals. We hope to find them again in 2026. At the organizational level everything went smoothly, starting from the management of the two clubs: I must thank the Tennis Forza and Costanza 1911 and the Ospitaletto Tennis Center, without forgetting staff, institutions and of course the sponsors. All fundamental elements to allow us to propose a similar event every year, trying to improve ourselves continuously”.
